Hotting up for the Olympics 2008

In Dalian, Olympics are everywhere. Whole streets and parks are closed for security reasons while Olympics staff prepare for the reception of the perpetual torch.

The Beijing Traffic Authority now has video screens of all major intersections and on all of the five perimeter ring roads of the mega city.

Taxis fly colored flags, try their best to understand English, at least they listen three times before refusing you a ride. If the driver takes you to the wrong place he doesn't charge.

Taxi drivers also get free lessons in English. This morning my driver said to me, "welcome to Dalian.. My name is John Yi. Priest to meet you. . . . uh, your name?. . . . you like Tsingtao beer? . . . . nice day!" end of conversation. But at least it's a beginning.
